Starting a new school year often means entering a brand-new environment. For preschoolers, that environment can feel much larger than what they’re used to, and the newness can sometimes feel overwhelming. Along with new friends and routines come the many sounds of school — bells, clapping, the hum of the air conditioner, or even the bounce of a ball in the gym. These sounds can surprise children at first, but with gentle guidance, they can also become comforting cues that help them feel safe and confident in their day.
To support young learners, I created a Guess the Environmental Sounds video on YouTube, paired with a matching activity packet and an Beginning of the Year activity Book. The video allows students to listen carefully, pause, and make guesses about familiar school sounds. The packet then extends the experience with activities like coloring sheets, scavenger hunts, sequencing charts, and feelings-based reflections. Together, they create a well-rounded way for children to practice listening, identifying, and talking about the sounds they hear each day.
These resources are especially helpful at the beginning of the year when children are still learning routines and adjusting to their new setting. By connecting sounds to actions and feelings, we not only build auditory awareness but also help children feel more at ease in their school community.
Watch the video below, download the connecting packet to bring these activities into your classroom or get the activity book. It’s a simple, engaging way to help early learners start the year with confidence. Remember learning starts at home. Happy Learning!
